Physician Dispensing

Selecting the right repackager for physician dispensing

There are several factors to consider when selecting a repackager. Many make the mistake of only considering prices when selecting a repackager. This article discusses other factors to consider when selecting a repackager for your practice.

An important factor in selecting a repackager is whether or not your practice will be dispensing controlled subtances. Many repackagers do not carry controlled subtances. Ask the repackager about the availability of controlled substances and if they have any limits on what they can provide to your practice.

When you hand a patient a vial of medications, that patient views that medication as a product from you the physician. Make sure that the medications come in sealed containers and that the expiration date and lot numbers are cleary displayed on the packaging.

Another important consideration is what tools and systems the repackager will provide for your practice. At minimum, you should have access to some type of software in order to handle dispensing operations, print reports and so forth. (Remember, MedXDispensing Software is free to you.) Other equipment may include barcode scanners, printers, labels and patient information sheets for the medication you are dispensing.

Besides prices, it is important to understand what the minimum order amount is in order to get free shipping. Are there payment terms (Net-30) that the repackager will give to your practice? How much needs to be ordered before you see a lower tier of pricing? How often does the repackager update pricing?

Get referrals from your repackager and call them to ask questions about the repackager. Is their customer support friendly and reliable? Will they help resolve issues like missing medications and urgent shipments?
